Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is Jiya?

Jiya is a group fitness competition app for iPhone. You and your friends pick a metric (steps, distance, active calories, or workout minutes) and a duration, and Apple Health keeps score in real time. When the competition ends, Jiya generates a custom AI cartoon recap of the whole crew.

How do I sign up?

You can sign in with Apple or use email + a one-time code. There's no password to remember. After signing in, you can add a display name, optional photo, and avatar color.

Is Jiya free?

Yes. Jiya is currently free to use. If we add paid features in the future, we'll be upfront about what's included and how billing works.

What devices does Jiya support?

Jiya is currently iPhone only. It uses Apple HealthKit to read activity data, so it requires iOS and an Apple Health-enabled device.

Competitions

What metrics can we compete on?

Jiya supports four Apple Health metrics:

  • Steps — total step count
  • Walking + running distance
  • Active energy burned (calories)
  • Workout minutes — total time across logged workouts
How long can a competition last?

Jiya is built for short competitions — anywhere from a single day to a weekend or a full week. Pick whatever fits your group's vibe.

How do I invite friends?

Once you create a competition, share the invite link with your friends. They can tap to join from iMessage, group chat, or anywhere else you share it.

Can I be in multiple competitions at once?

Yes. Your activity is aggregated for each active competition based on its time window. Different competitions track independently.

What happens when a competition ends?

The leaderboard locks in the final standings, and Jiya generates an AI cartoon recap based on the participants. Everyone gets notified when the recap is ready, and you can download or save it.

Apple Health & Privacy

What Apple Health data does Jiya read?

With your permission, Jiya reads steps, walking + running distance, active energy burned, and workouts (used to compute workout minutes). All reading happens on your device.

Do you see my raw health data?

No. Raw Apple Health samples never leave your phone. Jiya only submits the aggregated total for an active competition (e.g., “6,432 steps from Saturday at 8am to Sunday at 8pm”) to the leaderboard.

How do I revoke Apple Health access?

Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Jiya and turn off any categories you no longer want to share. You can re-enable them anytime.

Does Jiya use my location?

No. Jiya does not request or use location services at all.

AI Cartoon Recaps

How are recap images generated?

We use OpenAI's image model (gpt-image-1) to produce a cartoon-style image based on participants' profile photos and a fun prompt about the competition. The result is best-effort and may not perfectly resemble each participant.

Can I save or share the recap?

Yes. Recaps can be saved to your photo library or shared from inside the app. They're for personal, non-commercial use.

What if the recap looks weird?

AI image generation isn't perfect. If a recap doesn't look right or includes anything inappropriate, contact support and we'll take a look.

Account & Notifications

How do I edit my profile?

Go to Settings → Profile in the app. You can update your display name, username, photo, bio, avatar color, and (optionally) gender.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings → Account → Delete account. Deletion is permanent and removes your profile, photos, and competition participations from our backend.

How do I manage notifications?

You'll be asked to grant notification permission when you first open Jiya. To change it later, go to iOS Settings → Notifications → Jiya. Notifications include reactions, rank changes, invites, and recap-ready alerts.

User Guide

Setting Up Your Profile

  1. Open Jiya and sign in with Apple or email + one-time code
  2. Add a display name and (optionally) a username
  3. Pick an avatar color or upload a profile photo
  4. Grant Apple Health permission for the metrics you want to compete on
  5. Allow notifications so friends' reactions and rank changes reach you

Starting a Competition

  1. Tap the “New competition” button on the home screen
  2. Pick a metric: steps, distance, active calories, or workout minutes
  3. Choose how long it should run (a day, weekend, or week)
  4. Give it a name (the AI recap uses this for inspiration)
  5. Share the invite link with friends
  6. Watch the leaderboard update in real time

Joining a Competition

  1. Tap an invite link a friend sent you
  2. Sign in (if you haven't already)
  3. Confirm the metric and time window
  4. Grant Apple Health permission for that metric if you haven't yet
  5. You're in — start moving

Reactions & Quick Phrases

Tap a friend's row on the leaderboard to send a reaction (flame, clap, etc.) or a quick phrase. Keep it kind — the goal is motivation, not harassment. Repeated abusive behavior can get an account suspended.

After a Competition Ends

  1. You'll get a push notification when the recap is ready
  2. Open the competition to see the final leaderboard and the AI cartoon
  3. Save the image to your photo library or share it with the group
  4. Hosts can delete the competition — which also removes the recap image from our backend

Troubleshooting

My activity isn't showing on the leaderboard

Solutions:

  • Open the Apple Health app and confirm the metric is recording (steps, distance, etc.)
  • In iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Jiya, make sure the relevant categories are enabled
  • Make sure you have an internet connection — leaderboard syncs need it
  • Pull to refresh the competition view
  • Force-quit and reopen Jiya

I'm not getting my email sign-in code

Solutions:

  • Check your spam or junk folder
  • Codes expire after 10 minutes — request a new one if it's been longer
  • Confirm you typed your email correctly
  • Some corporate or school email systems delay or block third-party emails — try a personal address if possible

Push notifications aren't arriving

Solutions:

  • Check iOS Settings → Notifications → Jiya and confirm notifications are enabled
  • Make sure Focus or Do Not Disturb isn't silencing the app
  • Sign out and back in to refresh your push token
  • Reinstall the app if the issue persists

The AI recap didn't generate

Solutions:

  • Recap generation can take a few minutes after a competition ends — give it some time
  • OpenAI's image service is occasionally unavailable; we automatically retry
  • If it's been more than an hour with no recap, contact support and include the competition name

App is slow or crashing

Solutions:

  • Force-quit Jiya and reopen it
  • Restart your iPhone
  • Check the App Store for updates
  • Make sure your iOS version meets Jiya's minimum requirement
  • If crashes persist, contact support with your device model and iOS version
