Getting Started
How do I create an account?
When you first open TalkTiles, you'll see options to create an account. You can sign up using your email address or sign in with Google or Apple. Creating an account allows you to save your tiles and sync them across devices.
How do I sign in with Google or Apple?
On the sign-in screen, tap "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple" depending on your preference. You'll be prompted to authenticate with your chosen provider. Once authenticated, your TalkTiles account will be created or linked automatically.
How do I set up my first vocabulary tiles?
After signing in, you'll be guided through creating your first tiles. Tap the "+" button to add a new tile, enter a word or phrase, and optionally add an image. TalkTiles comes with starter tiles to help you get going quickly.
Using TalkTiles
How do I add custom vocabulary tiles?
Tap the "+" button on the main screen to create a new tile. Enter the word or phrase you want, choose or upload an image, and select a category. Your custom tile will be saved and available immediately.
How do I organize tiles into categories?
When creating or editing a tile, you can assign it to a category. You can also create new categories from the settings menu. Categories help organize your tiles and make them easier to find. Tap and hold a tile to move it between categories.
How do I use the sentence builder?
Tap tiles in sequence to build a sentence in the sentence bar at the top of the screen. Once you've built your sentence, tap the speak button to have it read aloud. You can clear the sentence by tapping the "X" button.
How do I customize tile images and sounds?
When creating or editing a tile, tap on the image area to choose from our library of images or upload your own. TalkTiles uses text-to-speech by default, but you can record custom audio by tapping the microphone icon when editing a tile.
Account Management
How do I change my account settings?
Open the app and tap the settings icon (gear). From here, you can adjust voice settings, manage categories, change display preferences, and update your account information.
How do I reset my password?
If you signed up with email, tap "Forgot Password" on the sign-in screen. Enter your email address and we'll send you a link to reset your password. If you signed in with Google or Apple, use those services to manage your password.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings > Account > Delete Account. You'll be asked to confirm this action. Please note that deleting your account will permanently remove all your data, including tiles, categories, and preferences. This action cannot be undone.
What data is stored in my account?
Your account stores your custom tiles, categories, preferences, and settings. If you upload custom images, those are also stored. We do not store any communication history or usage analytics beyond what's needed to provide the service. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Troubleshooting
Why can't I sign in?
Make sure you have a stable internet connection. If you're using email/password, verify you're using the correct credentials. Try resetting your password if needed. If using Google or Apple sign-in, ensure you're signed into the correct account on your device.
My tiles aren't saving - what should I do?
Check your internet connection as tiles sync to the cloud. Try closing and reopening the app. If the issue persists, sign out and sign back in. Your tiles should sync once connected.
How do I restore deleted tiles?
Deleted tiles are moved to a temporary trash for 30 days. Go to Settings > Trash to view and restore deleted tiles. After 30 days, tiles are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
The app crashed - what should I do?
First, try closing the app completely and reopening it. If crashes continue, check for app updates in the App Store. If the issue persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app (your data will be preserved in your account). Please contact us if crashes continue after these steps.
User Guide
Creating Your First Tile
- Open TalkTiles and sign in to your account
- Tap the "+" button to create a new tile
- Enter the word or phrase for the tile
- Tap on the image area to select or upload an image
- Choose a category for the tile (optional)
- Tap "Save" to create your tile
Building Sentences
- Tap tiles to add words to the sentence bar at the top
- Tiles appear in the order you tap them
- Tap the play button to speak the entire sentence
- Tap the "X" to clear the sentence and start over
- Tap individual words in the sentence bar to remove them
Managing Categories
- Go to Settings > Categories
- Tap "+" to create a new category
- Give your category a name and choose a color
- Swipe left on a category to edit or delete it
- Drag categories to reorder them
Customizing Your Experience
- Open Settings from the gear icon
- Voice Settings: Adjust speech rate, pitch, and voice selection
- Display: Change tile size, grid layout, and theme
- Accessibility: Enable high contrast, larger text, or button feedback
- Categories: Create, edit, and organize your categories
Troubleshooting
Login Issues
Problem: Unable to sign in
Solutions:
- Check your internet connection
- Verify you're using the correct email/password
- Use "Forgot Password" to reset your credentials
- If using Google/Apple sign-in, ensure you're signed into the correct account on your device
- Try closing and reopening the app
Sync Problems
Problem: Tiles not syncing between devices
Solutions:
- Ensure you're signed into the same account on all devices
- Check that both devices have internet access
- Pull down to refresh on the main screen
- Sign out and sign back in to force a sync
- Check that you have the latest app version
Audio Not Playing
Problem: Tiles don't speak when tapped
Solutions:
- Check that your device volume is turned up
- Ensure your device isn't in silent mode
- Check if other apps can play audio
- Go to Settings > Voice to verify speech is enabled
- Try selecting a different voice in settings
- Restart the app
Images Not Loading
Problem: Tile images appear blank or won't load
Solutions:
- Check your internet connection
- Close and reopen the app
- Try editing the tile and re-selecting the image
- Clear the app cache in your device settings
- Ensure you have enough storage space on your device
App Performance Issues
Problem: App is slow or unresponsive
Solutions:
- Close other apps running in the background
- Restart the TalkTiles app
- Restart your device
- Check for app updates in the App Store
- Ensure your device has the minimum iOS version required
